Distinguished and Famous people from Bankstown
Bankstown and the surrounding district have shaped careers in politics, performance and cricket. Childhood schools, swimming pools and backyard games provide more precise beginnings than a general claim that every familiar name was born in the suburb.
🤝 Paul Keating
Paul Keating grew up in Bankstown and attended De La Salle College before leaving school at fifteen. Clerical work and employment with a local-government workers' union preceded his parliamentary career. He served as Australia's treasurer before becoming prime minister from 1991 to 1996. His government pursued native title legislation and reconciliation alongside wider economic and social reforms. Bankstown was the childhood setting from which that national political life developed.
🎭 Bryan Brown
Actor and author Bryan Brown grew up in Panania and has recalled travelling by bus to Bankstown to learn to swim and see films. He later returned to discuss his novel The Drowning at the Bryan Brown Theatre, a venue named in his honour. His own account of those early adventures connects the local swimming pool and cinema with a much later life of storytelling. The district supplied experiences before it supplied a theatre bearing his name.
🏏 Steve and Mark Waugh
Twins Steve and Mark Waugh grew up playing cricket in the backyard at Panania before representing Australia together. Steve later recalled those childhood Test matches when discussing their decisive partnership against the West Indies in Jamaica in 1995: he made 200 and Mark 126 as Australia won the match and series. Steve subsequently captained Australia to the 1999 World Cup. A shared local childhood became preparation for partnerships played in front of a very different audience.
